There are many cities around the world that got their uniqueness by how they look at night. Can you imagine how New York, Paris or Sidney would look if suddenly they lose their signature nighttime scenery?
However, today’s technology focuses on cutting costs and safety, rather than how it looks. Despite the fact that LED streetlights are considered as revolutionary, they have shown consequences which are really shocking.
It is considered that the LED lights save cities funds on power and maintenance. In same time, these lights provide better and much clearer vision at night.
Even though, old orange-ish and yellow-ish lights seem warmer and are more pleasant to some people, it is fact that they do not illuminate the streets well as they are supposed to.
The LED lights provide clearer, cooler night light vision and better illumination. But, according to warning issued by the American Medical Association (AMA), the LED lights are harmful to human health.
Namely, in some cities in which LED street lights were implemented, citizens have started complaining about the harshness of the lighting.
For instance, the city of Davis, California implemented LED lights with intention to change the project midway as there have been numerous complaints about the new bright lights for causing glare and hurting eyes.
What is even more shocking, at a certain color temperature (CT), lights may cause eye damage.
The AMA warns that lighting mustn’t exceed a CT above 3000 Kelvin. In other explain this more precisely we are going to present examples for comparison: candle gives off a CT of about 1800K while incandescent bulb has a CT of about 2400K. Scientists explain that LED lights that have been installed around the country have a CT above 4000K. These lights contain a cool blue wavelength that can scatter when it hits the eye.
It is undeniable fact that LED lights make the road seem brighter and clearer, this type of light may damage the retina. In addition to that, brighter light contributes to more light pollution that can disrupt people’s sleep rhythms and animals’ as well, but also may shake up their migratory patterns.
It is important to highlight that the AMA is pro LED lightning, but they suggest converting to lowest possible emission of blue light. They also advice shield the LED installations to reduce glare and possible harm.
