When news agencies and outlets discuss the refugee crisis, they invariably use photography and video footage to highlight their point. While the refugee crisis is certainly happening and real footage exists, some of the iconic images that have been shared online thousands of times have been manipulated to illicit a more emotional reaction from viewers.
The pictures are cropped and displayed in a way that does not showcase the true situation. When the Syrian refugee crisis first began, President Barack Obama said it is “not American” to institute “a religious test for which person who’s fleeing from a war-torn country is admitted when some of those folks themselves come from families who benefitted from protection when they were fleeing political persecution, that’s shameful.”
Since taking over the presidency, Donald Trump tried to institute a travel ban against Muslims and failed. But when you see the photos that have become part of the iconic refugee schema, you may be shocked to see that the truth has not been fully represented. Check these images out!
One iconic photograph depicts dozens of men of Middle Eastern descent desperately reaching for necessary supplies.
But if this is a representative photo of the refugee crisis, “where are all the women and children?” Mad World News asked.
According to data collected by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, there are more than 4 million registered Syrian refugees. Clearly, this is not everyone, but it is a large enough number to judge trends. The data shows that 50.5 percent of Syrian refugees are woman. Females who are between 18 and 59 make up 23.9 percent of all the refugees fleeing the war-torn country. Males in that same age group make up 21.8 percent.
The majority of Syrian refugees are under the age of 17 – 51.1 percent of people fleeing the country are children. 38.5 percent of these are younger than twelve.
Although the numbers indicate that the refugee crisis contains people of all genders and ages, the photo’s authenticity is thrown into question. As it turns out, it was not genuine but a tool meant to make people feel more compassion and potentially donate money to refugee organizations.
Another famous refugee picture shows a group of Middle Easterners struggle to pass through what appears to a cold sea. They are clinging to life via the life vests. And they seem to be really having a hard time.
But when Bare Naked Islam discovered the truth, many people were shocked to realize that the people in this image were not “helpless.” Why not? Because when the original image is seen, people are able to stand in the water and it is not as deep as it appears. This lead many conspiracy theorists to label it as an elaborate hoax.
While the refugee crisis is happening, not all information reported on it has been truthful. Make sure to check your facts. To do that, simply Google your questions and look for websites that can be trusted.
